What type of material does Humanitas look for?

To learn more about what we look for in a script, we encourage you to read this article on on our website about the art of screenwriting and exploring the human condition.

Are there page limits?

We do not accept feature scripts over 120 pages, but otherwise we do not have strict length requirements. We do, however, generally advise that:

  • Single-cam 30-minute pilots be between 22 and 38 pages

  • Multi-cam 30-minute pilots be between 52 and 58 pages

  • 60-minute pilots be between 44 and 65 pages

  • Feature-length screenplays be between 90 and 110 pages

I’m not a film student. Can I still apply?

Many of our applicants are enrolled in a film, TV, playwriting, or screenwriting track or program at their respective university, but any and all students are welcome to submit their material.

My student status has changed or will change during the submission period (leave of absence, graduation, etc.). Can I still submit? 

Students must be enrolled in a college or university program located  within the United States at the time of their submission. Students enrolled in some non-degree certificate conferring screenwriting  programs organized by an accredited college or university (e.g.: UCLA  TFT Professional Program) are also eligible. If you have questions about if a particular program is eligible, please contact Humanitas.

Do I need to be concerned about language or sexual content in my script?

No, it is not necessary to censor your material.

Does Humanitas own the rights to the scripts we submit?

No, you own your script. Humanitas makes no claim to ownership or exploitation rights outside of the internal purposes stipulated in our release form.

Do you accept submissions from a writing team?

Yes. Please only submit one application per team. 

I’m an International Student. Am I still eligible?

Applicants do not need to be U.S. permanent residents and/or citizens, but must be enrolled in a college or university program located within the United States at the time of their submission.

My script is a genre piece (e.g.: fantasy, science fiction, horror, et cetera). Is it still eligible?

Yes. Scripts of all genres are welcomed.

Can I submit my spec script for a show that is currently on the air? Can I submit my spec script for a show that has previously aired?

No. This program only accepts original material.

Can you waive the submission fee?

Humanitas has a limited number of submission fee waivers it can offer annually. Please use this form to request a fee waiver.

Can I have an extension?

Unfortunately, no extensions can be given.

I accidentally uploaded the wrong file in my application. Can you switch files out for me or withdraw my submission?

No. All College Screenwriting Award submissions are final. No refunds are offered.
