Applicants: All undergraduate and graduate students.
Requirements: Students must be enrolled in a college program at time of submission.

The David and Lynn Angell College Comedy Award recognizes one writer each year whose work advances the Humanitas mission and is currently enrolled in a college or university program. It was created in 2003 to honor the lives of David and Lynn Angell, who were aboard Flight 11 on September 11, 2001. David Angell was a writer on the staff of Cheers and co-creator of Wings and Frasier. Lynn Angell worked as a librarian and supported David during the early years of his career. The David and Lynn Angell College Comedy Award was created to recognize young writers and encourage them to create works that enrich the lives of others through comedy that captures the human spirit.

Humanitas seeks work that explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way. Comedies do this, whether the audience realizes it or not, by delivering punchlines that shine a light on the absurdism of modern life, parodying institutions or trends, and by just telling a good story about funny people.

The Humanitas mission also lends itself to championing stories and writers who, for varying reasons, may go overlooked by the traditional marketplace.

The student-writer selected as an awardee will receive a trophy at the annual Humanitas Prizes event in September, a $20,000 cash prize, and additional benefits.

Humanitas recognizes that students are often in a precarious position as they transition into the labor market, and a cash prize of this magnitude grants students flexibility post-graduation by mitigating moving expenses, defraying the cost of tuition, or funding creative projects that would otherwise not be financially feasible.
