2023 HUMANITAS PRIZES TOAST

About the Event

Since 1974, the Humanitas Prizes have honored professional film and television writers whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced and meaningful way.

The Humanitas Prizes event has previously been presented at a hotel ballroom in the Los Angeles area, but in solidarity with Local 11 Unite Here and their ongoing efforts to renegotiate the wages and working conditions at hotels across Los Angeles, we will not present an event of this kind this year.

Instead, on November 2, 2023, at the Avalon Hollywood, Humanitas hosted the Humanitas Prizes Toast, a celebratory party and awards program in honor of the 2023 Humanitas Prize winners and nominees, the 2023 Voice For Change Winner, the Writers Guild of America, and the recipients of the 2023 New Voices Fellowship, the David and Lynn Angell College Comedy Award, and the Carol Mendelsohn College Drama Award.

We announced winners and nominees in the Los Angeles Times in August 2023. The Toast was announced in The Times’ feature story on Humanitas here. Subsequent coverage of the event appeared in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

At the party, winners received trophies during a short program with remarks. The event was hosted by Lennon Parham and Jessica St. Clair. Jenny Bicks and Billy Ray served as presenters. The Toast featured Live DJ sets by Novena Carmel (KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic) before and after the program.

Funds raised at the Humanitas Prizes Toast will provide essential support for the Humanitas Prizes, New Voices Fellowship, College Screenwriting Awards, and Public Programs, like Groceries for Writers and The Writers Room.
